Description

Delight in these easy and flaky Breakfast Pastry Pinwheels made with buttery puff pastry, creamy sweetened cream cheese, and your favorite fruit preserves. Perfectly golden and light, they offer a delicious and elegant start to your day that’s effortless to prepare.

Ingredients

Scale

Pastry

  • 1 sheet puff pastry (thawed)

Filling

  • 4 oz cream cheese (softened)
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup or honey
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup fruit preserves or jam (raspberry, apricot, or blueberry)

Finishing

  • 1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)
  • Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Baking Sheet: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to ensure the pinwheels don’t stick.
  2. Mix Cream Cheese Filling: In a small bowl, blend the softened cream cheese with maple syrup and vanilla extract until smooth and creamy, forming the sweet filling base.
  3. Prepare Puff Pastry: Roll out the thawed puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface. Cut it into 9 equal squares to form individual pinwheels.
  4. Score the Squares: In each square, draw diagonal lines from each corner toward the center, stopping halfway in, creating four triangular flaps per square for folding.
  5. Add Filling: Spoon a small amount of the cream cheese mixture into the center of each square, then top with a teaspoon of your chosen fruit preserves to add a fruity burst.
  6. Form Pinwheels: Fold one corner of each triangular flap toward the center over the filling, gently pressing to seal and create the signature pinwheel shape.
  7. Apply Egg Wash: Lightly brush each assembled pinwheel with beaten egg to achieve a beautiful golden and shiny crust when baked.
  8. Bake: Place the pinwheels on the prepared baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 15 to 18 minutes or until puffed and golden brown.
  9. Cool and Serve: Allow the pinwheels to cool slightly, then optionally dust with powdered sugar. Serve warm or at room temperature for a delightful breakfast treat.

Notes

  • You can swap fruit preserves with fresh fruit slices or chocolate spread for variation.
  • Best enjoyed the same day for maximum flakiness and freshness.
  • Reheat in the oven to regain a crisp texture if serving later.
