Ingredients
Scale
For the caramelized onions:
- 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
For the burgers:
- 1 1/2 pounds ground beef (80/20)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 4 slices cheddar or Swiss cheese
- 4 burger buns
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- Lettuce and tomato slices (optional for serving)
Instructions
- Caramelize the onions: In a skillet over medium heat, heat olive oil and butter. Add the sliced onions and cook slowly, stirring often, for 25–30 minutes until deeply golden and caramelized. Set aside.
- Prepare the burgers: In a large bowl, mix ground beef with salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Form into 4 equal patties.
- Cook the burgers: Preheat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the burgers for 4–5 minutes per side, or until they reach desired doneness. During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheese on each patty and cover to melt.
- Assemble the burgers: Toast the burger buns if desired. In a small bowl, mix mayonnaise and Dijon mustard. Spread the mayo mixture on the buns, then layer the patty, caramelized onions, and optional lettuce and tomato. Serve hot.
Notes
- For extra flavor, use a mix of cheddar and Gruyère cheese.
- Caramelized onions can be made ahead and stored in the fridge for up to 4 days.
- Swap beef for turkey or plant-based patties if preferred.
