Description

These Caramelized Onion and Cheese Burgers are a gourmet twist on a classic favorite. Juicy beef patties topped with rich, sweet caramelized onions and gooey cheese, all sandwiched between toasted burger buns. Perfect for a backyard BBQ or a weeknight dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

For the caramelized onions:

  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

For the burgers:

  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef (80/20)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 4 slices cheddar or Swiss cheese
  • 4 burger buns
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • Lettuce and tomato slices (optional for serving)

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the onions: In a skillet over medium heat, heat olive oil and butter. Add the sliced onions and cook slowly, stirring often, for 25–30 minutes until deeply golden and caramelized. Set aside.
  2. Prepare the burgers: In a large bowl, mix ground beef with salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Form into 4 equal patties.
  3. Cook the burgers: Preheat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the burgers for 4–5 minutes per side, or until they reach desired doneness. During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheese on each patty and cover to melt.
  4. Assemble the burgers: Toast the burger buns if desired. In a small bowl, mix mayonnaise and Dijon mustard. Spread the mayo mixture on the buns, then layer the patty, caramelized onions, and optional lettuce and tomato. Serve hot.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, use a mix of cheddar and Gruyère cheese.
  • Caramelized onions can be made ahead and stored in the fridge for up to 4 days.
  • Swap beef for turkey or plant-based patties if preferred.
