Ingredients
Scale
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 325°F (163°C).
- Cream butter and sugar: In a large bowl, cream together softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add vanilla extract if using.
- Mix in flour: Gradually mix in flour and salt until the dough comes together.
- Knead and shape: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead until smooth. Roll the dough to about 1/2 inch thickness and cut into desired shapes.
- Bake: Place cookies on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Prick each cookie several times with a fork. Bake for 20–25 minutes or until edges are lightly golden.
- Cool and enjoy: Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
- For traditional flavor, use pure butter and avoid overworking the dough.
- Store shortbread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two weeks.
