Description

This Easy Mashed Sweet Potatoes recipe delivers creamy, naturally sweet, and buttery mashed sweet potatoes in just 30 minutes. Steamed to tender perfection and flavored with maple syrup and butter, this dish is a delightful side perfect for any meal or holiday gathering.

Ingredients

Scale

Sweet Potatoes

  • 3 pounds sweet potatoes (about 6 medium-sized)
  • ¼ teaspoon salt, plus extra to taste

Seasonings & Add-ins

  • 2 tablespoons melted salted butter
  • ½ cup milk (your choice, 2% recommended)
  • ¼ cup maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon finely minced parsley (optional garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prep Sweet Potatoes: Rinse and scrub the sweet potatoes thoroughly. Peel them and cut into 1 to 2-inch cubes to ensure even cooking.
  2. Steam Sweet Potatoes: Place a steamer basket inside a large pot and add water just below the level of the basket. Add a pinch of salt to the water to infuse flavor during steaming. Place the sweet potato cubes into the basket.
  3. Cook: Cover the pot and heat over medium-high heat until the water bubbles. Steam the sweet potatoes for 20 to 30 minutes or until they are tender and easily pierced with a fork.
  4. Mash: Transfer the steamed sweet potatoes into a large mixing bowl. Add the melted butter, milk, ¼ teaspoon salt, and the maple syrup to the bowl.
  5. Whip/Mash: Use an electric mixer to whip the sweet potatoes until smooth and creamy, or mash them by hand with a potato masher if you prefer a chunkier texture.
  6. Serve: Serve immediately, garnishing with finely minced parsley if desired for a fresh, vibrant touch.

Notes

  • Choose sweet potatoes that are firm and free of blemishes for the best flavor and texture.
  • You can substitute milk with almond, soy, or oat milk for a dairy-free version.
  • Adjust maple syrup quantity according to your desired sweetness level.
  • Use fresh parsley or omit it entirely if you prefer a simpler presentation.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 3 days and reheated gently with a splash of milk.
