Description

Sizzling Chinese Pepper Steak with Onions is a flavorful and easy-to-make stir-fry dish featuring tender strips of marinated flank steak cooked with crisp bell peppers and onions. This savory dish is enhanced with soy, oyster, and hoisin sauces, garlic, and ginger, delivering a perfect balance of heat and sweetness. Ready in just 25 minutes, it’s a satisfying main course ideal for weeknight dinners served over steamed rice or noodles.

Ingredients

Scale

Beef Marinade

  • 1 pound flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil

Vegetables & Aromatics

  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger

Cooking & Garnish

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided
  • ¼ cup beef broth or water
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • Chopped green onions or sesame seeds for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Marinate the Beef: In a medium bowl, combine the thinly sliced steak with soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, cornstarch, and sesame oil. Toss well to coat all pieces evenly. Let the mixture marinate for at least 15 minutes to absorb the flavors.
  2. Sear the Beef: Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over high heat. Add the marinated beef in a single layer and sear it for 2 to 3 minutes until browned on the outside but not cooked through. Remove the beef from the pan and set aside.
  3. Stir-fry Vegetables: Add the remaining 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil to the skillet. Toss in the sliced red and green bell peppers and onion. Stir-fry for 3 to 4 minutes until the vegetables are tender-crisp. Add minced garlic and grated ginger, cooking for an additional 30 seconds to release their aromas.
  4. Combine and Cook: Return the seared beef to the skillet with the vegetables. Pour in the beef broth and sprinkle the black pepper over the mixture. Stir to combine all ingredients thoroughly. Continue cooking for 2 to 3 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly and the beef is fully cooked.
  5. Serve and Garnish: Serve the sizzling pepper steak hot, ideally over steamed rice or noodles. Garnish with chopped green onions or sesame seeds if desired for added flavor and presentation.

Notes

  • For a spicier version, add sliced chili peppers or a dash of chili oil during the stir-fry step.
  • To increase the sauce quantity, double the beef broth and add an extra teaspoon of cornstarch mixed with a tablespoon of water for thickening.
  • Ensure the steak is sliced against the grain for maximum tenderness.
  • Use a hot pan or wok to get a good sear and prevent overcrowding to avoid steaming the beef.
